The Single Most Important Success Skill…

Today’s post is about Leadership.

We’re going to talk about what it is, why it’s important and 3 things you can start doing today to become a more powerful and influential leader.

So let’s dive in…Leadership.

Leadership is one of those skills that’s especially challenging to teach, yet it’s a skill every single successful networker on the planet possesses.

If you’ve read Magnetic Sponsoring or been a subscriber for any period of time, you’ve likely heard Mike talk about the Alpha Networker™ concept before.

Here’s a quote directly from Magnetic Sponsoring:

“Belief always comes before results.

Belief leads to certain actions and behaviors. Those actions and behaviors are going to be awkward in the beginning, but given dedication, time and affirmation, those actions and behaviors will turn you into the type of person you need to be in order to generate the results you seek.

Your goal in the network marketing industry is to become what I call an “Alpha Networker™.”

An example of an Alpha would be a successful upline leader living in a mind-state of abundance, and who is pursued and followed by others.”

This is found in the beginning pages of Magnetic Sponsoring before any discussion of marketing. In fact, the entire first chapter is dedicated to “mindset” and “leadership.”

The reason is simple…

Leadership is THE single most important skill every networker MUST master.

Only leaders can command respect, gain recognition and influence people.

Only leaders have the ability to get others to “buy in” to their vision and help them reach their goals.

Only leaders have the drive, ambition and perseverance required to reach the highest levels of success in this industry.

And only leaders truly understand what motivates and drives people to take action and how to create win/win situations that guarantee success.

Now I want to clear up a common misconception about Leadership, and what it really means. It can be best summed up in a question Mike and I have been asked on many occasions:

“How can I brand myself and position myself as a leader when I don’t have any results yet?”

Here’s the answer…

Leadership is a state of mind more than anything else.

I’m sure you’ve probably met someone before and thought to yourself, “This person is a natural born leader.”

A “natural born” leader is simply someone who’s state of being and interacting with the world comes from a place of self-assurance and conviction.

They posses a certain strength of character and the natural ability to get people aligned with their vision.

Many factors play a role in this person’s natural ability to lead, including their environment, culture, social conditioning, education and their inherent personality traits.

Unfortunately, not all of us are “natural born leaders.”

I know I wasn’t.

My upbringing was pretty rough, and I didn’t really have a lot going for me early on in life.

I lived in low-income housing surrounded by drugs and crime. I was bullied and picked on. I got horrible grades and eventually ended up dropping out of school.

As a result of my conditioning and environment, I was timid, unsure of myself and extremely awkward in social situations… to the point of being almost reclusive.

But fortunately, leadership, like any skill, is something that can be practiced, learned and even mastered by just about anyone.

In my journey from “Beta” to “Alpha”, I discovered some common traits that every leader in this industry shares. They are:

1.     The Leadership Mindset

2.     Increasing And Giving Value

3.     Mastery of Networking

The Leadership Mindset

We all carry around baggage from our past. This baggage consists of limiting beliefs and stories that serve no purpose other than to hinder our growth.

The leaders path is to uncover these limiting beliefs and replace them with new beliefs that will serve us in our journey towards self-growth and mastery.

And this journey of self-improvement never ends.

It has been my experience that the more I challenge myself, the more I step outside of my comfort zone, the more “leaps of faith” I take…

The more I grow personally and the more powerful of a leader I become.

Alpha Networkers™ know their “outer game” and the results they get will always be a direct reflection of their “inner game.”

They constantly strive to hone their leadership skills by mastering their “inner game” and overcoming limiting thoughts and beliefs.

Increasing And Giving Value

The second thing we can do to grow as leaders is to focus on increasing our personal value by acquiring new skills.

I recently had the opportunity to speak at an event, and on one of the very first slides, I had the following quote from Albert Einstein.

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”
- Albert Einstein

I love this quote because it perfectly conveys one of the most powerful universal truths, which is this:

Your level of success will ALWAYS be proportionate to the amount of value you have to give to the world.

That’s why true leaders, true Alphas, are so passionate about learning and growing.

They understand the importance of education and why it’s so crucial to continue learning, growing and improving because the more they grow, the more value they have to give.

Mastery of Networking

The third thing you can do to increase your leadership skills is surround yourself with other leaders who inspire and uplift you.

When you surround yourself with successful leaders, you will in turn grow as a leader.

This is a well-known principle by Alpha Networkers™. It’s why they join or create masterminds, attend events and network with other leaders.

The journey to the top of the mountain is never a lonely one.

Every successful person in the world has had the help of other leaders. They’ve had mentors, coaches and team members who’ve helped them climb to the top.

As I said before, I was very shy, timid and lacked the confidence required to approach and meet people. This was my biggest challenge and until I overcame it, my success was limited.

Today I’m very fortunate to have some of the top internet marketers in the world as friends. If I have a question or need help, I can simply reach out to my network and ask.

Alpha Networkers™ do everything they can to expand their network and create powerful alliances with other influential, successful people.

They know the surefire path to achieving their goals is to find and connect with people who’ve already gotten the results they want.

So these are the 3 characteristics EVERY single 7-Figure networker in this industry shares.

Those who excel in this industry practice these important leadership principles, those who are struggling or failing ignore them.

That’s the bottom line, and it’s why “Leadership” is going to be the main theme this month.

Beginning next week, my good friend Ryan Angelo will be sharing some eye-opening videos with you that will reveal how you can become a more powerful, persuasive and influential leader.

Ryan has a unique ability to quickly infiltrate networks and connect with power-players. It’s due to this gift he’s been able to create alliances and friendships with some of the most successful leaders in our industry in a very short amount of time.

Some of these people include…

  • Mike Dillard
  • Jonathan Budd
  • Ann Seig
  • Mark Hoverson
  • Katie Freiling
  • Brian Fanale
  • Norbert Orlewicz
  • And of course, yours truly.

I Need Your Help!

IF you’re a leader or developing yourself into a leader… Tell me your thoughts on leadership.

Is it really important?  Or can people succeed without it?

Also, what questions do you have about…

Finding and attracting leaders to your business? How to network with and build friendships with successful people? Overcoming fears, beliefs or any other obstacle that you feel is holding you back?

Thank YOU for YOUR leadership!

Absolutely Tim. This post is dead-on! I remember reading those words when I was just getting started online… thinking that it sounded nice.

But it wasn’t until months later that I really started to internalize those words. It was after this, that things started to change in my business.

Leaders in my opinion are not born. Everyone has the ability to lead, it’s whether they follow these clues inside them or ignore them that really makes the difference!

  2. Tim Erway says:

Thanks Brenda, and congrats on being the first to post a comment! You’re pretty quick. ;-)

  3. Marc Finnie says:

Hey Tim, Marc here. I truly enjoyed your blog post. You hit the nail on the head. Thank you for the inspiration, mind set techniques and most of all, the honesty. We consider ourselves to be leaders in our industry of Real Estate Investing, but for the past 2 years , my wife and I have been involved with a network marketing company in which we truly believe in and we are totally committed, but have not got it quite of the ground. We have recruited quite of few people through the warm market approach, but we would like to start building an online presence and attracting new and hungry leaders in to our business. We know that in order to do this, we have to truly become those leaders in network marketing. We have purchased a couple of Mike Dillards products, but never really got off the ground. We consider ourselves to be leaders, we just need help to take our business to the next level. Any advise? Signed

  4. Well Tim,

I think Some Do Achieve Greatness with out leadership, they do it all alone (in a mlm view) recruiting dozens of new people a week not knowing much about anything. Each week they have new people coming in and out of their business but it slowly grows!

But to achieve true greatness you must develop those leadership standards and truly SHOW who you are and what you know. Connecting with others on a real 1 on 1 basis at much as you can.

The question I really have is, I myself am a Leader I know I am I’ve helped many people truly see the most of them selves and succeed in their business, but how to I get others to work with me even though I’m a leader I know my stuff but I am young. 20 years old and I know more than 90% of other marketers and mlmers out there. How can I truly show them I’m who they should join or work with.

I know age or looks shouldn’t really matter when it comes to recruiting or judging others, but sadly it does I’ve experienced personally over and over again getting turned down or laughed at by many greats that I’ve come across, it doesn’t slow me down I’ll always keep going but Wondering if I can get some REAL help

  5. Cesar Fasano says:

Now, this is a great piece of information Tim! I think that leadership as a key ingredient to success is often under-estimated in our Industry. In my opinion, ONLY leaders know how to change others lives and get paid for it.

Just like copywriting is critical to place those ads out there, leadership is that one skill that needs to be watered day in and day out.

    Awesome stuff!

    - Cesar

P.S: I have a question…If you say that you come from a very difficult place, how have you been able to network and cultivate relationships with people like Mike Dillard, etc? Is it only because of the values that you share? Thanks!

  6. Thanks Tim,

    Great post mate!
There’s nothing like being mentored by someone
who’s achieved what you want to acheive,
doesn’t accept excuses and that you know they
have your best interest at heart. When what they SAY
you should do…turns into results it’s awesome.

    Thanks for all you do.

    Pete.

  7. Don Egnor says:

    Hi Tim,

Great words, love Albert’s quote and totally agree with everything you said here. It all starts with mindset and leadership as Mike went over in MS. Mike got it right when he devoted the entire chapter to this. We must constantly challenge ourselves to improve and hone our skills as the most important investment going is the investment in ourselves.

I strive to give value in everything I do as this is key. We must first give value before we can do anything else. As you say leaders are not born…they create themselves and always are advancing and getting better everyday and in everything they do. I have learned so much from Mike and what he teaches on a daily basis and for that I am very thankful. I keep listening to you and the others mentioned as well and look forward to the day I get to meet you on a face to face basis.

As Mike says…thank you for your leadership Tim, you are appreciated my friend!

  8. Billee Brady says:

    Hey Tim,

Your timing couldn’t have been better with this post because I am currently working on my first webinar that is on Tuesday this week.

The nerves are there but I KNOW I can do this and I know the benefits that this will have on myself and my business so I can’t wait!

ALSO I am waiting with baited breath for your Get Traffic 3.0 BONUS webinar “How to create info products”… Any idea on the release date of this?

Thanks for sharing and your leadership Tim!

  9. Wayne Lennan says:

    Hi Tim

Great blog, I truly am inspired by what I have read. The Einstein quote is awesome it reflects what I am trying to do in my business. I am an insurance agent and our goal is to be more valuable to our clients rather than successful.

Thanks again for a great read!

    Wayne Lennan

  10. Great post. Belief in ourselves is certainly cornerstone to become the leaders, coaches, guides we were born to be.

Looking forward to more on this topic!

  11. Great post Tim!

I would have to agree with John C. Maxwell, when he states that “Everythinig rises and falls on leadership”.

Everyday we are presented with challenges and victories, some days the victories come easy, other days, not so much. A leader will keep their eye on the vision of what they want to accomplish and never back down, they may change course, but the destination is the same.

Leaders, I don’t believe are born, they are developed and sometimes self-discovered. For all of those that are doubting if you a leader, or perhaps a pre-Alpha, look around. You are here, learning and implementing what you learn. Leaders do the deed that is necessary long after the feeling to do that deed has left.

Congratulations to everyone stepping up and becomnig the Alpha this world needs you to be!

  12. Don Egnor says:

    Tim,

I want to reiterate Cesar’s question above…How have you been able to network and cultivate relationships with people like Mike Dillard and others mentioned in this post. How did you overcome the obstacles and and get to where you are today?

  13. John says:

    Hi Tim,

Am I a leader? Definitely. I also think everyone has the capacity to become a leader and we all are in different ways.

“Is it really important? Or can people succeed without it?” I feel that every leader at some time needs to defer to another leader at times. Too many chiefs never works out well. Anyone that has sponsored someone into their business is a leader at that point.

The best leaders are the one’s that make others feel as though they are appreciated and have the potential to be a great leader, if not today, in the future. We are all a work in progress and becoming stronger leaders everyday.

    John Rothstein

  14. Steve Hawk says:

Awesome post, Tim. You are dead on. Not only is it important to rise above and become a leader but one needs to provide the value, coaching and mentoring to help bring out the leadership qualities others.

I’m going to share this post with my team of “future” leaders!

    Steve Hawk

  15. Mike says:

Tim, I was born into a really negitive family and learned to be positive by reading the right books and now as a parent of two awesome kids I never talk down or even use the words I can’t in my home.Be a leader not a follower we are creations by associations we become what we hang with and I will always be a leader.I believe that what you put into anything you will get out and only if you lead in the right direction, never say you can’t because your right. If its meant to be it up too me and I live buy that every day.Lead, follow or get the hell out of my way here we come.

  16. Jimmy Mac says:

Wow! Loved this article. Inspired me to step back into my leadership pants.. Lol. Thanks Tim!

  17. Becoming an effective leader is one of the biggest obstacles I’ve had since joining the industry. I have noticed that the more I think like a leader the more I succeed. At first I had no luck then slowly I noticed I was talking to people differently I wasn’t begging or explaining anymore. Becoming a leader has by no means been a quick process for me I’m struggling everyday to change my frame of mind. For everyone out there having the same problems don’t give up.

  18. Andrea says:

    Tim,
    great thoughts.
    I’ve reflected on this a lot…
and I think that to be a leader you have to lead yourself first.
That’s probably just my way of saying mindset. If you expect
a lot of yourself and you’re going places, then you will attract
    others.

  19. I believe that we aren’t always born as natural leaders, but we can learn leadership as a skill. As with any skill, it takes practice to get good at it.

We must just take steps forward and begin to transform by doing leadership activities.

Something that I like to do is to become the leader I want other people to be. A mental exercise I like to do is to think about myself through someone else’s perspective and ask myself, if they copied what I did today would they have progressed or shown some sort of growth?

If not, then I quickly change my activities to match my goals.

    Great post.

  20. Ignatius R says:

A leader is one who can gain the attention of a mass. To connect to a group who has the full attention of the leader.
Being a leader is important because to succeed, you need to be persuasive but in a way that is non threatening. To develop such a skill will take time. You definitely cannot succeed without being a leader. Now I am getting the idea as to why only 5% of the people and 95% do not. The 5% of the people are leaders and the 95% are followers. Those who will fall for anything. This is why being a leader is important to be successful.
I will like to know where can I attract leaders to my business. I will also like to learn how to build and how to network with successful people.

  21. Marguerite Wolfe says:

Tim, This is a timely post for me to read since I’m new to network marketing and definitely do not feel like a leader here.

Yet I am a leader in the other parts of my life and I need to bring that mindset to my internet work. As a leader I have much higher expectations of myself, I’m generous and hungry for the next thing.

So even though I’m a novice to network marketing I need to get out of the lowly newbie attitude of anticipating complications at every turn.

As a leader I operate from a confident, helpful, secure position and I stand tall (not slumped over)!

Thank you for your well written piece.

    Marguerite Wolfe

  22. Andrea says:

You took the words right out of my mouth, Tim! This is exactly what I focus on because I’m pretty tired of people exploiting the pain and frustration internet network marketers go through telling them they can become multi-millionaires by learning this marketing technique or by selling this product. It is why I took forever to get my business online because I was so turned off by that mentality and didn;t want to be associated with it. But Mike Dillard pioneered what you speak of here, and we are all thankful. Those who learn what makes them leaders in a way that no one else can duplicate (we all have the potential to do that), then you will be on your way to becoming an industry leader yourself. Thanks for the post, Tim :)

  23. Damayanthi says:

    Hi Tim,

Excellent information and advise on Leadership here. I believe self confidence play a major role in getting into the mindset you need to become a leader.
I think taking action on what you learn will boost your confidence. When you have self confidence you’ll be able to think beyond your needs & help others.

Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

    Damayanthi

  24. Maurice Redd says:

Great post Tim! We get so caught up with trying to recruit new reps by learning the latest marketing/sponsoring techniques that we often forget that people are attracted to leaders not your opportunity. This is the greatest lesson of Magnetic Sponsoring.

Leadership is definitely a necessity but I think we forget it is a journey (that never ends) not a destination. I have had the opportunity to participate in some masterminds with some great leaders. The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that all of the greatest leaders in this industry (and in the world) never stop learning, growing, and challenging themselves.

The great thing is I think that once you have a true desire to become a leader you will discover you have the leadership skills already inside of you. I think that we develop these skills naturally from our life experiences and that’s what will makes each of us original and unique leaders.

I look forward to the upcoming videos.

  25. Kelly Baader says:

    Hi Tim,
First off, awesome post! And I also did enjoy your presentation during No Excuses Summit here in Vegas.
As I had privilege to serve and work with some “high-social status” leaders of all walks in my former corporate life , and involved in quite a bit non-profit organizations, then naturally built my mlm team offline to start with….I found out the true leaders are:
•Not showing-off the power they have, but walk in that power naturally
•Willing to take responsibility to fail and to succeed!
    •Other-oriented giving attitude always.

For me, the most tough time of a leader is not when they are trying to climbing up the ladder, it is how they can stay up there after they reach the ceiling; and humble enough to allow that ceiling to become their floor again.
    Kelly

  26. Leadership begins with Integrity. It is more important than being smart, well-spoken, fearless, hard-working, a good salesperson, savvy, or anything else.

Whether you have faith or not the first sentence in Rick Warren’s book, Purpose Driven Life, tells it all. “It’s not about you.”

Do for others and doing it with your heart and not just on the surface, makes the difference.

Great post Tim and way to go Brenda jumping on it.

  27. Steve Dobson says:

    Tim,

I agree with you 100 percent. I actually have a post on my blog from last month that asks the question “Are You A Leader in Your Network Marketing Business?” Like you I believe that it is a skill that every successful leaders has to have. Without leadership skills you can develop other leaders in your business. To become an effective leader you first have to be a follower and that comes from listening to your sponsor (if they have leadership abilities themselves), your coach, your trainer, or your mentor. If I have heard it once, I have heard it a 1000 times, no one joins a network marketing business or opportunity, they join a leader that they feel can lead or teach them things about this industry that they don’t know.

  28. I agree with you, Tim, except the fact that, I do not think that there are people who are born leaders. I believe that everyone is born with the potential(the raw material) of developing into a leader. Once he/she finds himself/herself in the nurturing soil(circumstances, events, education, environment, challenges, belief systems), he must decide to take up the leadership role and do whatever it takes. Sometimes we look at someone who is quite a leader and say, “He/she is a born leader”. We forget what transformation he/she had to undergo to be where he/she is. Belief systems play a major role. As Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, you’re right. If you think you can’t, you’re right, too!” This disposition is probably the strongest determinant of who becomes or does not become a leader. We are like clay(the potential). We can be shaped into some of the strongest and most adorable ceramic(china, coffee mug flower pot, etc). It all depends on the potter, the artist, that is YOU!

  29. Bob Dill says:

    Tim,
Really good a good post on leadership. If I was to make any comment on my idea of Leadership it would be somewhat simplistic on a complexed issue. Leadership is the ability to evaluate Strengths and weaknesses, to utilize the strength and to elevate the weaknesses. A person, company, group, state or country is only as good as the its weakesses link. The idea is to elevate our weaknesses to a level far above the normal. Then and only then can you be a true leader.

Thanks for the opportunity to share, Bob

  30. I have never really heard Mike’s story before but his younger days sounds a lot like mine only I didn’t grow up in a neighborhood of crime, I grew up in a farming community in the flatlands of Saskatchewan, Canada. But it brings back memories of the same type of life style. I was over weight as a kid and was bullied and picked on because of it. I too was timid, unsure of myself and extremely awkward in social situations… to the point of being almost reclusive. I used my aloof ability as my defense and never really interacted with alpha people much. I have become better at being a leader as I have gotten older. Now with the help of some awsome tools we have like Magnetic Sponsoring I have determinded to build a business around helping others that are like us to excel in their status also.
Glad to meet you Tim and have a great day.
    Bob

  31. Edward White says:

Tonight while I was reading on some copy writing material, I came across this idea, of having a focus on writing in your readers shoes, not your own ego.

Easier said than done, since most of us might figure if I am going thru this problem, someone else may also. While it may be the case, are you creating the value, by reflecting in your own ego, or are you doing it in their shoes?
This weekend, I have a lot to re-write, since I wasn’t looking at things the right way. While I was still providing value, in my blog posts, I don’t think I ever had the view of others, from their standpoint, only just my own. This tweak, will hopefully make my blog a bit more useful to others, over time.

    Great post!

  32. Tim,
I so new at all of this I keep trying to wash the green of me every morning. One thing I appreciate is the understanding of mindset or state of mind and everything else will fall into place with the right coaching and leadership skills. I’m a leader learning leadership experience in this business. In my previous career managed a zillion people. I enjoy learning from experienced people with something of value to share. I’ll be back to catch up on any other great tips and thoughts about this industry. Learning everyday I’m breathing.

  33. Anne-Marie says:

    Thanks for this!!

A leader is more successful when he knows his followers and why they are following………………then he can continue to give value.

  34. Mikke Banson says:

Tim you are deadon. Your wealth is certainly not measured in terms of your physical assets. It is more likely a measure of how much leadership you possess. Usually, the greater leadership you possess the more people follow you. Ironically, the more people follow you, the more your opportunity to amass physical assets. No one ever succeeded without leadership.I agree that leadership itself is a mindset (belief) that is a product of a knowledge-skills complex. What explodes your leadership is your willingness to share this freely.

  35. Bernardus says:

Excellent post Tim. To me a leader is somebody that lead by example, a person that live and die for what he believe in no matter what others may say. Somebody that has rock hard belief to overcome any obstacle or hurdle in their path to success. A person that believe in what he or she set out to achieve with out any doubt in mind. Somebody that gives his all to provide the best for his followers. A person that always look out for the best interest of his team and provide guidance to them to lead them to their success before thinking of his own success. A leader should be seen almost as heroic but still keep being humble. A leader never tell people that they are a leader. Leaders where leadership on themselves and people can see it from a mile away. Thank you for your great post Tim

  36. Adam Snyder says:

    Great post tim.

Leadership is something that most people don’t have and it is simply because they don’t want to control their destiny.

  37. Excellent nuggets of information, thank you! I enjoy the way you and Mike Dillard speak about leadership. I believe some are natural born leaders, while others have bits and pieces of what it takes to be a leader. Regardless of where you fall along this continuum, everyone needs to continue to develop their innate leadership qualities.

  38. Dave Hayes says:

Tim, what a GREAT post, well done, keep them coming. I could so resonate with what you said. As owner of Divad Marketing (inspired by Magnetic sponsoring) I have consistently applied ALL 3 things ~ you HAVE too in this industry~ and that is where SO many go wrong and ULTIMATELY fail, because they don’t or won’t apply those 3 key principles. I work with a LARGE list of Magspo prospects who have through infocation re-adjusted their thinking AND as a result, THEIR performance and respective Businesses HAVE improved! Dave

  39. Alabamarjara Itama says:

    Tim,
These principles are timeless…they hold true all the time. My greatest challenge right now is how to package this whole thing in a deliverable and easy to follow manner to a community that is still very largely ‘offline’. Any suggestions from you and the ‘club’?

  40. Leadership is vital. But to be a great leader you also have to be able to learn from others, show you can learn, and give back. That way you’re not stuck in your own dogmatic beliefs. leadership is about sharing, nuturing and giving as well as showing the path.

My mission in life is to help everyone who wants to have a dog and deserves to have a dog to choose the right one so we never need puppy farms or rescues again. And to show people with a dog allergy which dogs they can choose from too. So I need to lead people down an untrodden path. And that’s my challenge – because no-one else is doing it.

“Do not go where the path may lead, instead go where there is no path and leave a trail” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

  41. Sam says:

Super post as usual. It’s all in the mind. The power of mindset cannot be underestimated. This is what enables true leadership

  42. Matt Olsen says:

I was taught once by a great leader. He told me that “Leadership is Service”. I have never forgotten that.

  43. Dr. Sam W says:

I have been following “Magnetic Sponsoring” for sometime, but I am not an active user. BUt I do tell al those who I work with on my web Coaching site that they should use the pints they can get from “Magnetic Sponsoring”. With out the knowing the tips & tools Mike teacher your business will be very hard to build.

    Dr. Sam W

  44. Al says:

Tim, you speak clear and calm, but broad and powerful truth. There is just no other way to the top of anything. The key difference between Magnetic Sponsoring and any other educational line in this business (Eban Pagan comes pretty close…) is that the key fundamentals are stressed and the frills and fluff ignored.

Only by mastering fundamentals by constant repetition with the goal of consistently improving ones performance of these fundamentals can one master any field. Network marketing is just another field and it applies here as well.

So, I always recommend to anyone I come in contact with – Magnetic Sponsoring is the single most important work in our industry. Whatever other training you do, this must come first – then everything else will be usable. Without these basics, the rest may or may not connect you to success…

Truth is truth and it operates just like gravity.

    Al

  45. Tim,

this post really hit home for me today. I am at a crossroad in my life and business and this message was perfect.

I know deep in my heart that I am a leader, and after reading this post I am prepared and ready to step up to the plate and smack it out of the park.

    Thanks for sharing this today.

    Dave

  46. Agreed. It’s all about leadership. You and Mike should be commended for your leadership in this industry where there are a heck of a lot more ‘posers’ than true leaders. Keep up the good work.

  47. Okafor Felix says:

You said it all. I have always been Mike’s student when it comes to Magnetic Sponsor and alpha networker. It is all about leadership. Leadership means leadership. There is no middle word in between. You give what you have. Network marketing business is synonymous with leadership training and of course that is what i am getting now from you. Thanks and please continue to give us more tutorials

  48. Gary Dum says:

Leadership is about helping others. Reaching down to lift another up. Encourage someone, give them confidence and see something positive that will help that person take just the next step forward. Any of us can lead if we genuinely care about the people we are associated with.

Give others plenty of credit for what they do and those people will follow you almost anywhere. The great quarterbacks always credit their lineman, their backs, their receivers and the rest of the team with the wins and those men become the truely admired leader. The team will rally around that leader.

In contrast we have a president that is focused only on himself and only what he has done. Everyone else is to blame and he takes no genuine responsibility for anything. It seems that our nation has left him and is desperately looking for a person that is focused on the people.

If you can help and encourage enough people they will lift you, tell others about you. They learn to help others they way you taught them. They won’t go with out you.

The top of the mountain is yours to share. Thanks Tim and thanks to your team for helping all of us in this community.

  49. Jim Boswell says:

Excellent stuff! I love the Einstein quote. I do believe that some people are natural born leaders. They just do naturally what the rest of us have to learn to do. This doesn’t mean that natural born leaders can’t improve or that it’s hopeless for everyone else. Keep up the good work!

  50. Dr. Dick says:

Thanks so much for reminding us of this timeless principle again, Tim. In every aspect of life, people are looking for LEADERS. If you want success, you MUST BE a leader!

  51. Todd Miller says:

The great thing about this post is that not only did it provide excellent information but it also started a mastermind discussion on leadership. I think to have any success you are either a leader yourself or you are working with someone who is (your mentor) until you step into the role yourself. Find someone who has the qualities you want and do what you must to get them as your mentor.

  52. Dave Hayes says:

There are some awesome & VERY true comments on this Blog, I agree with most that’s been written, especially the comment about being a studnet of Mike Dillard. Those that follow know they will be successful, by applying his rules, leadership into their Business lives & personal lives. Those that don’t are MISSING one HUGE trick. Leadership os truly a GREAT motivator. Dave

  53. Hi, Tim,
I had a rough childhood too, so I identify where you WERE. But we can’t stay there to get where we need to go.

Just recently (I’m a brand new member of CCP) one of my clients paid late, and the next job didn’t come through at all. I had nothing in my account to cover my CCP membership, so I had to downgrade to student. That left me with nothing to sell. All the old feelings if failure came forward. It was a very low period for me. I had already used up my whole business account, put all the overdraft protection into the Las Vegas Event and plane fare, and I had nothing left.

I’m only saying all of this to show how easy it is to go backward. I’m not there anymore, because the principles you just described are more true than my physical reality. I started another website (it’s not quite complete yet) and am blogging my little heart out on several sites, and I’m finishing my e-book, since my major skill is writing.

I will see you in Las Vegas. I WILL NOT QUIT!

  54. Cori Rizzo says:

    Great post Tim.
I am a leader in my volunteer work, but have been struggling to become a leader in my business. One of my biggest obstacles is to overcome “phone phobia”, and that is holding me back as far as closing sales.
Looking forward to more great posts from you.

  55. The reply’s speak for them self. Leadership is very important. One thing I continually learn is that the more I step up to lead the more I screw up, the more I screw up the more I learn and I the more I learn the better I am able to help others.

That is one thing you don’t hear much about when it comes to “leadership” is how much one really messes things up.

Just yesterday I was leading a team setting up some equipment and messed up a direction which resulted in restarting the task but in return the new troops got a good lesson on setting up the equipment.

How would you or go about turning a screw up into a lesson based on past experiences?

  56. david munn says:

    Great Tim

You are so right Tim. Thats why I used the following tag line in my blog website. Believe in yourself and you can’t fail. You must believe that you will succeed and never give up.

    Thanks Tim

  57. Two eyes, two ears and one mouth – 4 out of the 5 are sources of input while only one is a source of output. Those wannabe leaders think or feel that they must impose there will on others; essentially thinking leadership is telling others how great they are. The true leader will empathize with others through listening and observing and then mentoring the person based on what they’ve learned about them. Real leaders observe four times as much as they talk.

  58. This is a very informative post. I remember reading Magnetic sponsoring for the first time, I really didn’t get the first time around but I read it over and over again until it started to sink in. I had to develop myself as a leader if I wanted people to follow. Working on my personal development and educating myself.

  59. gene says:

very well written piece; it is very interesting to see the link between people raised in conditions of distress and then learn how they reach deep within themselves to embrace the will to survive and ultimately develop the desire to succeed.Leaders value the most precious gift a person owns; TIME. I dislike meetings because they generally suck up my valuable time with drivel.A leader is a teacher; a person who embodies the aura of power and strength, gently draped over humble beginnings. People follow a leader even when he or she has nothing; for that is everyone’s starting place…..

  60. Great post Tim.
I do believe what you say that
    leadership =influence.
    No question.
I also believe EXAMPLE is necessary
    as a leader.
If you’re not the lead dog …the view’s the same!
Mike’s MS book will either scare you in or out.
    Of building your own network.
I love the fact you guys are truth tellers.
You tell folks what they need to hear….
not what they want to hear.
Thanks for what you folks do Tim!!

  61. What a wonderful post, Tim. Thank you so much for your leadership! I’m a leader in some areas, but striving to be a leader in the Network Marketing Arena. We can all be leaders, since we are put here to experience, grow and contribute. What we don’t know instinctively, we can learn. Network Marketing helps people grow and expand their comfort zone.
I’m looking forward to your articles and continued learning! Thank you!

  62. bhadz says:

    Thanks Tim

im so glad to read this one, im in the New to become a networker but its helps me to understand and to believe..

  63. Marissa says:

Reading this post should have 1)Convicted you and held you accountable to something you already knew, but perhaps forgot or ignored (unintentionally, of course) and/or 2)just gave you a huge shot of self-confidence in the arm (re-establishing the notion that we leaders are nearly invincible and can go out and conquer that mountain we’ve been staring at for that last “x” amount of time) ;) heehee

It is amazing how when you truly submit to becoming a student – to opening your mind and heart to possibilities – and putting some effort forward, it seemingly just “appears.” That answer that pushes you in the direction you were struggling to get to for what seems like forever…and much of the time it is merely a reminder of something you knew all along. Combine it with the life experiences and knowledge you’ve gained since the last time you heard that golden piece of wisdom, and it gains new insight, new power and new application in your life.

As leaders, we are constantly breaking new uncharted ground – it’s what we do – we’re eager to learn and to gain value. That can sometimes leave us losing confidence in ourselves as we step out of our comfort zone into a place we’ve never been. Just remember the strength it took to get you this far and draw from those life experiences and leadership areas you have already gained – everyone has them even if they do not acknowledge them. If it is new territory for you, someone has been there before; you are never alone – even if that means finding someone who is exploring that same new territory.

Thank you Tim and the rest of the leaders for leaving such inspiring comments…it’s just what I needed today.

    :D

  64. Tim,

You are dead on in this post. Of the three common traits of leaders that you listed, I believe The Leadership Mindset is the most difficult to develop. The baggage that you speak of that we all carry around, the limiting beliefs and paradigms, are so deeply ingrained in our sub-conscious minds that most people are never able to overcome them. It’s not that they don’t want to. Once they become aware of them they certainly would like to change them. They just don’t know how.

I would welcome anyone’s thoughts on the best ways to change your self-limiting beliefs.

  65. Great stuff Tim. I took a class @ church. The course was the 21 Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. I tell you Tim that course had an enormous impact on my life. Being one who has a center of influence on people I take none of the laws for granted. continue posting positive attributes that will help all in the long run..

  66. Sam says:

Spot on with Marissa’s response. Love it

  67. Ken says:

So true! As I study more and more it becomes impossible to deny the truths you state. I can see that my weak points are where I am lacking in leadership skills. And people know this and if you do not have it, they will look over you or around you.

BUT, if you have it (leadership), they cannot look in your direction and see anything else. It is the ‘great attractor’ and I believe many people are searching desperately for those who have it.

It is appalling to see the lack of leadership in the world of business and in our political and government institutions. If this is not the major problem in our world today, it certainly ranks high.

    Thanks Tim.

  68. Elle says:

    Tim,
Love your work, so true though, I don’t think you can be truly successful unless you are a leader, you might be temporarily successful but in the end if you don’t have enough to give and guide then others will stop following you!

  69. Larry says:

Excellent read and I cannot agree with you more. Leadership is vital to the growth of any organization, be it a business, a team. and even a family. Without leadership, its like steering a boat without a rudder…you never get to your destination. One aspect of leadership that I find intriguing involves giving. When you position yourself as someone that gives (knowledge, education, an listening ear, adivce, etc) in order to help others achieve their goal, you really begin to tap into not only making life better for others but you also become a person of value.

  70. Christopher says:

Tim, “When yea are humble, thou shalt be exalted; when yea are exalted, thou shalt be humble.” A man of influence with this trait is without a doubt a true leader. I have met quite a few during my journey of sphere of influence. They were and are great, exciting, energetic, well driven people of success. They exude wealth and prosperity. Yes and indeed it attracts me even more. That being said, to the average person and if I dare say the “Dream Stealer” would know nothing of the kind for they lack the mental qualification. Everything begins with a desire. I know we “ALL” have that, but for most it all stops there. In order to pursue the vision, it takes dedication. This is where it gets about 50% of the pursers. This is due to not having the mental stability of reading, learning and studying wealth and prosperity and more importantly not having a mentor to help you expand your Dreams. I truly believe we have the mindset to achieve whatever we want to have or need, but like an impetuous child they need guidance and nurture to develop into a well discipline, sharp individual with potential to succeed in any venue. Going after wealth and success blind without passion and dedication is the result of quitting for he has not mastered failure. God has given us the tools and the brain; it is up to us to make it happen. Enjoy…

  71. richlend says:

Of all the response’s above, the one missing the most is really the best. And we’ve all heard it, thats “LEAD BY EXAMPLE”. Which is not always easy and for many reasons but, ultimately it is the Goal!!

Which is exactly why so many of us are following you sir. Thank you for your inspiration and example of Leadership

    Peace Out

The question that comes to my mind is , how do we develop the leadership mindset. What are the practices which should be followed deligently, just as to become a good typist , we need to practice typing regularly for a few hours /minutes daily.

Also , how do we delvelop network of relevant people who are sucessfull at the same time ready to help .

  74. Laurynas L. says:

    Totally agree.
I don’t know any other way to succeed without leadership. Is it possible to lead people without having skills how to do it? Unless you are a liar :)

  75. Olegario Baliton says:

I assessed myself if I can become a leader after I read this but these bits of advices pushed me to start again and again until I become one. Thank you very much.

  76. This is the sort of post that makes this blog so useful. There is no doubt that leadership is the key to success in any area. In response to Deepak Palan, there are lots of great forums and often local meetings where you can network with like minded people. Do a Google search of your area and field and see if there is anything local – live events are the secret sauce. But even if you’re not somewhere that live events occur, having an internet connection can let you network via forums, chat rooms and social media, among others.

  77. Christopher says:

A leadership mindset is simply a way of life reinforced with positive affirmation.

    Best Regards

  78. Kevin McNabb says:

    Tim,

Thank you for this awesome post first and foremost.

In our industry people are so focused on just driving traffic or learning how to drive traffic that they forget to take the time to learn leadership.

I know that when I joined the MLM industry in 1985 I needed to grow dramatically as an individual if I was going to lead a large team.

That is why the day I started my MLM journey I also started my personal development journey.

I awake each morning think about what I can do to improve myself so that I am in a better position to help others.

Tim, thanks for all you do for our profession.

    Kevin

  79. Arlene Hoag says:

Inspiring post. Being a leader requires believing in oneself and knowing that we are in charge of our reality. What we find in front of us today is a result of our beliefs about ourselves in the past. We are in a successful Kangen Water ionizer business and much of the success is because we believe in ourselves and our product.

  80. Greg Vining says:

Hey Tim! Great post. Of course leadership is important. Probably the most important thin of all, which is why it’s in the very beginning of the MS ebook.

The very first downline that I ever built completely vanished in about 3 months time. And I attribute that directly to my lack of leadership skills. I couldn’t deliver what they were looking for, so they went looking for it somewhere else.

Being a great leader starts with being able to lead yourself. And that is 100% mindset. It is truly the inner game that creates the outer results.

    Keep up the great work,
    Greg

  81. Ernest says:

Success can only be achieved through leadership. True success. Some may achieve it without leadership. But it will no doubt vanish as fast as it came. Leadership is a developed skill. Without persistant, relentless, and on purpose development one will never be able to become a leader ( a true leader) and have true lasting success in life.

  82. I just wanted to say thanks Tim and Mike. I have been following you guys from the days of Traffic Formula 1. With your help I finally understand the secret you have been teaching us. You guys rock and thanks again

  83. MarieGrace says:

Thanks so much! This was brilliantly summed up and direct to the point! Magnetic sponsoring is truly shaping who I am and how I approach this industry called network marketing.
